Tertullian added to updated Church Fathers (Latin and English)

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

It’s been a bit since you’ve seen any new posts here, but don’t worry Jim and I lead very busy lives. One of the projects I’ve been working on for quite a while is the gradual increase of works in the Church Fathers user version and I think the long wait will have been worth the while.

The new update to the Church Fathers database now includes Tertullian’s works in Latin and English. Roger Pearse has long been the online guardian of Tertullian, by hosting his works on his own website and by putting forth countless hours of searching, scanning and typing. And his website will probably always be the golden standard, but now you can also use BibleWorks to do advanced searches in Tertullian’s works, among other things.

Tertullians’ translations are already available in BibleWorks through the Early Church Fathers module which comes as part of BibleWorks. That module has an older translation along with notes and cross references. While very often the English translation found in the new Church Fathers update is straight from the Ante-Nicene Fathers set, sometimes it is not.

Changes to book names

In order to get the most of Tertullian’s works (and to be able to navigate more smoothly), you will need to append the following book names to the bookname file in BibleWorks:

DOWNLOAD CHURCH FATHERS UPDATE! (unzip these files in the \databases\ subfolder of BibleWorks and overwrite any old files)

New Versions - Church Fathers in Greek, Latin and English!

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

After putting together the version of Eusebius’ Church History for BibleWorks, I thought I stumbled onto something good and there was a need to add more writings of the early Church Fathers* into BibleWorks. The only question was whether to add them as separate versions or put them together in one release. I decided that it would be better to start putting them together in one gigantic release. So this is the first of hopefully many updates to this version.

Out of the zip file what you have included is original language and translations of the following texts:

  • Justin Martyr: Apology 1, Apology 2 and Dialogue with Trypho
  • Clement of Alexandria: Protrepticus, What Rich Man is Saved?, and To the Newly Baptized
  • Tertullian: Apology, On Spectacles
  • Minucius Felix: Octavius
  • Eusebius: Church History
  • Basil the Great: To Young Men on Greek Literature

If that’s not enough to get you excited, I’m not sure what is!

Oh I know. It’s probably the cost. These are all free downloads for BibleWorks users. The files all work perfectly in BibleWorks 9 (make sure you have updated the latest executable files), and should work in BibleWorks 8, but I make no guarantees.

Special thanks to those who have helped me put together these files and especially to Kevin Edgecomb for sharing the work he had done on Justin’s Dialogue!

DOWNLOAD!

1. Unzip the files to the \databases\ subfolder in your BibleWorks folder and restart BibleWorks. The new versions will use the version IDs CF-G for the Greek version, CF-L for the Latin version, and CF-E for the English translations.

2. In order to get the book names to show up correctly you must also add any of the missing lines to your books.bna file (which is found in the BibleWorks subfolder called \init\ and can be opened with a simple text editor like Notepad)

Unless I’m mistaken the following book names come standard in BibleWorks, but if not, you would need to add them to your books.bna file:
JAp,The Apology of Justin,JAp,JAP
DJT,Dialogue of Justin with Trypho a Jew,DJT,DJT
TAp,Tertullian Apology,TAp,TAP
TSh,Tertullian The Shows,TSh,TSH
MFO,Minucius Felix The Octavius,MFO,MFO

If you’ve downloaded the Eusebius files, you should already have added the following to your books.bna file:
EH1,Ecclesiastical History-Book 1,EH-1,EH-1
EH2,Ecclesiastical History-Book 2,EH-2,EH-2
EH3,Ecclesiastical History-Book 3,EH-3,EH-3
EH4,Ecclesiastical History-Book 4,EH-4,EH-4
EX5,Ecclesiastical History-Preface Book 5,EH-5preface, EH-5preface
EH5,Ecclesiastical History-Book 5,EH-5,EH-5
EH6,Ecclesiastical History-Book 6,EH-6,EH-6
EH7,Ecclesiastical History-Book 7,EH-7,EH-7
EH8,Ecclesiastical History-Book 8,EH-8,EH-8
EH9,Ecclesiastical History-Book 9,EH-9,EH-9
EHX,Ecclesiastical History-Book 10,EH-10,EH-10

These are the new book name abbreviations and need to be added to your books.bna file:
Jaq,Justin-Apology 2,Justin-Apology 2,Apology 2
CPT,Clement-Protrepticus,Protrepticus,Protrepticus
CRM,What Rich Man is Saved?,What Rich Man is saved?,Rich man
CBP,To the Newly Baptized,To the Newly Baptized,To the Newly Baptized
INC,On the Incarnation of the Word,On the Incarnation of the Word,Incarnation
BTY,To Young Men on Greek Literature,To Young Men on Greek Literature,To Young Men on Greek Literature

* I use this term rather loosely to mean Christian writers of the first few centuries.

New Version - Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

I am happy to announce the release of Eusebius of Caesarea’s Ecclesiastical (Church) History as a new version for BibleWorks! This is a combo release in that the download contains both the Greek text of Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History and an English translation.

About the English Text:

The English translation is the same one that is found in the Schaff Early Church Fathers module that is provided in BibleWorks, only I have stripped it of all notes. If you want to read along with the notes and such, I suggest using the CHM module. This English translation is provided only to help ease of use for those who need both English and Greek in the Browse Window.

About the Greek Text:

The Greek text is that of Kirsopp Lake, J.E.L. Oulton, and H.J. Lawlor, which is found in the old public domain edition of the Loeb Classical Library and provided at the Perseus Digital Library. The Greek text is optimized for use in BibleWorks 9. It makes use of special characters that were not available in earlier versions of BibleWorks, so while you can use the files in older versions of BibleWorks, you will likely not have an optimal text (the use of quotation marks for instance will cause problems). If this text is of interest to you and you don’t have BibleWorks 9, it might be worth considering upgrading for. This text is available as a free download here, but other Bible programs have it available only for an additional cost. This text is the bare Greek text only without morphological tagging, but using an Internet connection, it is possible to get morphological help from the Perseus website.

There will likely be small updates to this version released at later dates. Special thanks for this precision goes to Mark Eddy who has done a lot of the micro-editing to make sure the versions line up properly.

DOWNLOAD!

1. Unzip the files to the \databases\ subfolder in your BibleWorks folder and restart BibleWorks. The new versions will use the version IDs EUSEBE (English version) and EUSEBG (Greek version))

2. In order to get the book names to show up correctly you must also add the following lines to the file books.bna (found in the BibleWorks subfolder called \init\)

EH1,Ecclesiastical History-Book 1,EH-1,EH-1
EH2,Ecclesiastical History-Book 2,EH-2,EH-2
EH3,Ecclesiastical History-Book 3,EH-3,EH-3
EH4,Ecclesiastical History-Book 4,EH-4,EH-4
EX5,Ecclesiastical History-Preface Book 5,EH-5preface, EH-5preface
EH5,Ecclesiastical History-Book 5,EH-5,EH-5
EH6,Ecclesiastical History-Book 6,EH-6,EH-6
EH7,Ecclesiastical History-Book 7,EH-7,EH-7
EH8,Ecclesiastical History-Book 8,EH-8,EH-8
EH9,Ecclesiastical History-Book 9,EH-9,EH-9
EHX,Ecclesiastical History-Book 10,EH-10,EH-10

3. Right click the .bna file and use the Open With command with a text editor (like Notepad) to paste in the text above at the end of the file.

4. Save the file and re-start BibleWorks.

New Module - Pearse, Additional Early Church Fathers

Monday, June 27th, 2011

For those who own BibleWorks 8, you may have noticed that it includes the massive Ante-Nicene and Nicene and Post-Nicene Church Fathers set edited by Schaff. This set includes a huge number of writings in English by many of the early Church Fathers going back as far as the Apostolic Fathers 1st and 2nd centuries AD) to Gregory the Great (6th century AD).

What you may not have known was that as large as that series of writings is, it is is only a small part of what was written by the Church Fathers and during others who lived within that time period. Thanks to the phenomenal labor set forth by Roger Pearse (blog), a large number of these “other” writings has been published online. Roger has a passion for making old texts available that have long since been in the public domain. Much through his own expense he has not only typed in texts, but has also commissioned translations of foreign language texts into English all so that more people would have free access to these ancient riches. As part of this passion, he encourages others to freely use the fruit of his labor and redistribute it in other places. Therefore when I asked him if I could put it in a module for BibleWorks users he was delighted.

When you’ve installed the Additional Early Church Fathers, you will be able to access them via the menu system under Resources | Backgrounds | Pearse, Additional Early Church Fathers

So without further ado, I present:

the Additional Early Church Fathers texts as compiled by Roger Pearse (DOWNLOAD — 28 MB)

In order to get modules to work, be sure to do the following:
Step 1. Download the file as found on this page.
Step 2. Unzip the file into your “databases” subfolder of BibleWorks
Step 3. Right click on the CHM file (it’ll look like all other HTML help icons), go to Properties and make sure the box for Block is unchecked.
Step 4. Start up BibleWorks and the module is available either through the Menu system (under Resources) or in the Analysis tabs.
Font Help:
Because some of the files included here are older, Roger did not necessarily use Unicode rendering in all places. Therefore, you may find it helpful to download some of the extra fonts that he used in order to read these writings properly. The link to download the fonts is here. You can see this website for help on how to install fonts.
